'Het wegen van het hart' is a sculptural installation consisting of a ceramic heart, an antique wooden bascule (scale), a welded metal structure, and a textured ceramic wall plate. The heart — colourful, fragile, hand-shaped — lies on the weighing platform like a quiet witness to life. Behind it, a pale ceramic plate hangs on the wall. Covered in spike-like protrusions and vein-like ridges, it echoes the form and dimensions of the weighing plate, as if it carries the invisible imprint of what has been measured.
The work is inspired by ancient rituals in which the heart was weighed after death to assess a soul’s purity. Here, that symbolism takes shape through the tension between the living and the lifeless, the soft and the structural, the measured and the immeasurable.
The installation asks: what does a heart carry? Can its weight be known? In this interplay of material, memory and mythology, the act of weighing becomes both literal and metaphorical.
