'Murmuration' is a modular ceramic composition consisting of hand-glazed triangular tiles. The work was inspired by a quiet walk through the nature reserve De Platwijers, where I unexpectedly found myself surrounded by a murmuration of starlings — a hypnotic dance of density and dispersion.
Each tile features a subtle surface relief, layered with gestural glazes in blue, black and cream tones. Together, the fragments suggest motion: rising, folding, scattering like birds in flight. The pattern is both directional and open, forming a landscape that hovers between stillness and movement.
The composition responds directly to its environment. It was first presented outdoors, in a natural garden setting, allowing the interaction between material, ground and viewer to unfold gently — just like a murmuration itself.
